LeWeb3 - a little history and an overview

In my wanderings of Silicon Valley events, there's a fellow whose path I've crossed many times.  After our last connection at the most recent STIRR event, he asked if we could sit down to do an interview for his video podcast about the evolution of media (specifically the blogging/journalism dynamic). So yesterday afternoon he and I sat down to chat.

What, you might ask, does this have to do with LeWeb3? Good question.

In the time between our agreeing to talk and actually sitting down this fellow, Zennie Abraham, had done a bit of digging and found out about my work with LeWeb3. So after a few minutes of chat about media we dove into a deep conversation about LeWeb3 - primarily focusing on the event's history and talking a bit about this year's event.

So as the calendar days whip quickly towards this year's event on December 11 and 12, I wanted to share this little history lesson for those of you who might not know from whence this great event came.

Start-up Competition Contestants Selected!!!

This was hard.

More than 120 companies submitted applications for our competition, and the vast majority were really  good. But there were only 30 slots to offer, so we had to make some tough decisions.

Here's how it worked:

The process began with a review of the applications themselves. Applicants submitting to the competition found that every field was "required". This was done to ensure that we had the same set of data to review for each company. The form asked for background on the company, details about the technology/product and even a field that asked why they felt they deserved to be chosen.

While everyone put text into all the fields (because it was required to submit), there was a strong differentiation among candidates at this first level. Quite a few companies failed to provide the critical details that would allow us to consider the application in any depth, offering merely a few words or a short sentence in explanation and saying nothing whatsoever about what their technology did, what problem they solved and how they were differentiated in the market.

Without complete data it was impossible to consider these companies. That narrowed our list of competitors from about 120 companies to around 65-70 companies.

From there, a number of things were weighed:

  • What was the problem the company was trying to solve? Is it a big existing market, a growing market or an emerging market?
  • Does the solution the company offers merely echo other solutions on the market or is it truly differentiated?
  • If it's in a crowded market, does the company clearly differentiate itself or its product, explaining how they will rise above the noise?
  • Do they have a clearly delineated plan for revenue?
  • Will they have something they can physically show in a demo?
  • Will the company be either announcing itself or launching a brand new product or solution at LeWeb?
  • Also in an attempt to give as many companies opportunity as possible, we also considered if the company was one that had participated at LeWeb last year and tried to give a chance to newcomers.

As we considered those factors, the list narrowed to 50.

It was at that point we reviewed again whether the company had someone registered for the conference. More than half of them did not. As explained in detail on the application as well as on the various posts we published about the competition, a key requirement for companies in this competition is that to be considered, someone from the company must be registered to attend the conference. There is no charge to enter, but the competition it is only open to registered attendees for LeWeb3.

All 50 of the companies selected at this point were sent an email stating clearly that they had to ensure at least one person from the company was registered to attend. They were asked to reply and provide the name of the person who had been registered (especially if it was different than the name of the contact on the application that had been submitted).  This email gave a deadline for completing that registration.

After the deadline for that registration passed, we reviewed the list again and checked it against registration. A number of companies opted to withdraw from the competition at this point, and others failed to respond or register.

This narrowed our list to 38 companies for consideration.

We then reviewed the balance of market sectors and broke down the final 38 into groups -  B2B/enterprise, video, mobile, consumer - as we wanted to try for a fairly balanced representation across categories. Going back through the applications again, we considered the companies against each other in each of the categories and some of the companies slipped lower on the list against their category peers. We also at that point reviewed the geographic balance as we wanted to ensure representation from many countries.

After much deliberation and review, we narrowed the list further, and have now come to our final list of 30 competitors for the 2007 LeWeb3 Start-up Competition.

Thanks to all who submitted and congratulations to our finalists.

The selected companies will be contacted separately with details about the criteria for their presentations, explanations of the process, and information about a pre-conference rehearsal day that will hosted by one of our sponsors on December 10.

With that, we present to you, this year's competing class and the schedule for presentations:

Start-up application process closed!

A quick note to let you all know that the start-up competition deadline has now officially passed and we are no longer accepting applications.

In the next week we'll be reviewing applications and if there are any questions or we need further information from you we'll be in touch.

We intend to screen the applications and make our final selection to be announced on November 5.

Thanks to all of the great companies that took the time to submit their companies and products for consideration ... We have a GREAT pool of candidates. It may sound cheesy to say, but even on a brief first read, you're all winners and we only regret that there's only room for 30 of you.

October 20, 2007

Important update on start-up competition

As we near our deadline for the start-up competition applications, there's a very important reminder for all companies that have submitted. In order for your company's application to be considered, at least one person from your company must be registered to attend the conference.

Companies whose applications are submitted and who do not have a registered attendee will not be considered.

The form to register an attendee for the conference is here.

Bringing our theme to life - version 2 of the LeWeb3 2007 conference program

Stuffing a great volume of content into two mere days is a daunting task. Invariably subjects get left out in the programming process, and so we have done our best to compile a wide range of topics, perspectives and voices for this year's conference.

It bears mentioning that this is not the final version of our program. Some sessions will change, a few may shift times, a couple may drop off and there is certainly room to add some more. So if there are session topics or speakers you have mind that fit within our theme ("Evolution in Technology ... Revolution in Behavior") by all means, send them along.

We also are still coordinating with several speakers for sessions that, because they are still only partially baked, have been left off the program at this stage. But from here on out things will start moving fast and furious so fasten your seat belts and get ready for rapid acceleration with updates on the program - including audio and video interviews with some of our speakers - as well as details of our evolving start-up competition.

With that, I give you version 2 of our conference program for LeWeb3 2007.

It's been a couple of weeks since we opened the application process for the start-up competition at this year's LeWeb3 conference and we have had great response!  This year's competition will have space for 30 companies on the start-up stage. All of those companies will present in front of our panel of judges, which to-date includes: Saul Klein, Index Ventures; Erik Stuart, eBay; Chris Shipley, Guidewire Group; Jason Calacanis, Mahalo; Julien Cordornieu, Microsoft as well as Om Malik and Michael Arrington. We will be confirming a slew of additional judges in the next several days so keep your eyes on this space for more details.

Each of the 30 companies will get 7 minutes to present. They will be restricted to showing only 5-7 slides (if they use Powerpoint at all), and unless it's impossible to do so, the session also should include a demonstration of the product/service. If you miss the company presentation on stage, you can visit them in a small exhibit area that we will set up in the LeWeb3 networking lounge.

After the day of competition on December 11, the judges' scores will be tallied and we will select three winners. Those winners will be announced from the main stage on the morning of December 11 during a session in which the judges will discuss the trends and themes they saw from the presentations the day before.

In terms of the criteria for submitting an application, it's pretty simple. If you have an early-stage start-up that will have some news to share in early December - that can be a product launch or a company launch - you're welcome to apply. And it's simple to do so. Go to this form, fill it out, and you're on your way!

If you have any questions, please email Cathy Brooks, LeWeb3 co-producer and content curator.

Evolution in technology ... Revolution in behavior

The hardest part of putting together an event like LeWeb3 is that there are so many incredibly smart people doing so many exciting things in technology that deciding who and what to select proves a daunting challenge.

Thanks to great input from the LeWeb3 Facebook group, feedback through this blog, and of course the sage perspectives and suggestions from our superb long-time friends and advisors, we have crafted what we feel is a stellar first pass for this year's program.

In evaluating the market, we realized that we are facing incremental adjustment in technology but, in some cases, rather mercurial shift in its use. And so we have decided that the theme for this year's LeWeb3 conference will be:    Evolution in technology, revolution in behavior

Before saying more, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge several long-time LeWeb3 supporters who are once again, stepping up to assist us with LeWeb3, helping in various ways to address our key topics. Among them:

  • Jeff Clavier
  • Ouriel Ohayon
  • Thomas Crampton
  • Yossi Vardi
  • Rodrigo Sepulveda and Ivan Communod
  • all our partners and so many more friends...

About the program itself - We have divided our sessions into five main categories. Those categories and some of the current topics we're planning to address under them are listed below along with a complete list of confirmed speakers, as well as people and companies with which we are ironing out scheduling now.

There are some very important things to note about this edition of the program - You'll note that this does not indicate times for the sessions and that is because this is not a final version. Some topics may move from one day to the next and/or change a bit. We also will add topics and some topics may come off. This is a working draft and we look to you - our audience - to help further shape and guide the content with your input. We welcome suggestions for additional subjects and speakers that fall within our overall theme. Feel free to post comments about the agenda here, or email me directly.

Also, there is a strong chance that some of you were confirmed for the conference through a conversation with Loic. If that is the case and you don't see your name here, please don't take offense. It is an oversight on my part. Should this be the case, please just email me.
